Machining and Finishing for Critical Components

Precision Engineering for Critical UK Industries
Precision engineering and metal finishing play a critical role in industries such as defence, medical devices, oil and gas, and renewable energy. Even minor defects can lead to failures or reduce the lifespan of components. Manufacturers require processes that meet exact specifications and deliver consistent quality.
Milturn Precision specialises in accurate machining with rapid turnaround, offering a fully integrated service. The company holds ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 certifications, demonstrating compliance with international quality standards for medical device manufacturing and general engineering. With facilities in Woking and Swadlincote, Milturn Precision provides nationwide coverage, improving operational efficiency and service accessibility across the UK. By providing end-to-end manufacturing solutions, it reduces the risk of delays, reworks, and unnecessary costs.
In recent months Milturn Precision has been involved in a number of high profile projects with two of our key customers both of whom operate in extremely demanding market sectors.
Ultra High Vacuum Sector Project
The customer faced a tight deadline and a complex prototype build. Milturn Precision worked closely with the customer’s design team to implement cost-effective solutions at an early stage, reducing the risk of costly revisions. Using its Design for Manufacture (DFM) expertise, Milturn Precision produced 35 components, each machined to precise tolerances, finished, and assembled within a short lead time. As a result, the customer received the components ahead of schedule, enabling them to meet critical project milestones and fulfil their own delivery commitments.
Defence Sector Project
Milturn Precision was tasked with the urgent redesign of a communications component for a defence customer. The system was needed for urgent operational use by the Ministry of Defence, requiring an extremely tight timeline. Milturn Precision managed the entire process—from design through to assembly and finishing—under one roof, ensuring that every stage was completed on time. The project was delivered early, enabling the customer to meet urgent operational requirements. This success led to follow-on contracts, further solidifying Milturn Precision’s position as a trusted partner in the defence sector.
Milturn Precision operates with high levels of accuracy, using advanced CNC technology and skilled technicians to produce reliable components. The elimination of reworks and material waste results in cost-effective production. Delays within the supply chain can be costly, so the company employs efficient scheduling to maintain steady production flow. Whether manufacturing a single prototype or scaling up to full production, the same level of precision is applied. By integrating machining and finishing within a single facility, lead times are minimised, and logistical challenges are reduced.
“We provide practical solutions that meet functional and aesthetic needs at competitive pricing,” said Steve Mead, Group Operations Director at Milturn Precision. “With our skilled team and efficient processes, we deliver consistently high standards on time.”
Year-on-year investment in capital equipment has strengthened production capabilities within the machine shop. Increased capacity across both sites, including the introduction of a late shift in the machine shop, has improved efficiency and turnaround times. Further investment in additional metal coating facilities and accreditations ensures that high standards are maintained while expanding service offerings.
Ongoing investment in advanced manufacturing technologies continues to refine machining processes and enhance efficiency. These improvements contribute to greater accuracy, fewer delays, and optimised production costs.
